Planes, Trains, and Automobiles transported creative infantry from all over South Africa, each team had their objectives planned out and they were rapidly moving in on the target. Each armed with bullet proof EGOS ready to take on the world and nobody was going to stand in the way. As they reached their destination on a long street at the grand base, the tension grew and the adrenaline kicked in as they rubbed shoulders with their competition. It was at this point that I knew that the Loeries had landed in Cape Town…

The festivities of the weekend began on Thursday the 24 September with registration at the Grand Daddy Hotel on Long Street; probably one of the coolest hotels I have come across; the atmosphere was hyped up for the weekend events as everybody was in hope of winning a gold bird and others in hope of getting intoxicated on Tequila’s, Cosmo’s and whatever else was flowing.

The streets were rustling with activity throughout Long Street and surrounding areas, with numerous bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from, every place you walked or crawled into had the hype of Loeries all over it, giving off a super cool vibe.

The Battle of the Bands kicked off with high energy ensuring that no shooter glass was left unturned, and music filtered through The Assembly keeping everybody up in high spirits. Thereafter the famous Chairmans Party stepped into gear and then Cape Town got the true taste of what the Loeries are all about.

The battle lines were drawn, as the awards evening began with buses, cars and limos filled with creative EGO’S as they chanted their way onto the red carpet. Each team came in with bigger and better cheers than the next waving their warrior flags too.

Welcomed with pre-drinks and delicious snacks to keep you going through the ceremony. The Loeries Print Awards ceremony, hosted by ads24, with the opening act Jax Panic, they took the stage to get the awards off to a funky, upbeat start. The year’s best creative work in South Africa was celebrated with Gold, Silver and Bronze birds awarded to well deserved creatives in the Industry, huge pat on the back to all.

The after party capped off the evening with award winning cheers of their success and others drowning their sorrows, but nevertheless everybody seemed to get along and have an awesome time.

The following morning the streets of Cape Town were silenced… It was time to make peace with the hangover.

A successful and exhilarating evening took place on the Saturday evening, with the opening performances by Goldfish, and an inspiring opening by the Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille. The final Loerie Award winners were announced at the electronic awards ceremony hosted by the SABC. The work presented on the night was of the highest caliber to ensure that each award was well deserved.

The awards came to an end and the final Long Street Party was going to bring down the house. The celebrations went through the night, ending off a brilliant festival weekend.

As the teams started to pack up and head back home on the Sunday, I realised how passionate the country is about design and communicating solid creative work to audiences of all kinds to ensure a positive outcome. Sitting amongst some of South Africa’s top creative talent that not only inspires me, but inspires a nation.

As a business owner, I am proud to be part of the creative industry, and know that the young generation of today will be tomorrow’s future. The awards are more than just a canvas to bloat your ego but rather, a showcase of how creative design can impact and change the lives of people.

I believe as individuals we can move continents but together, as a colourful army we can move the world.
